Update - 18.06.2014

Since my last update (yesterday - 17th June), my EPQ supervisor has asked the EPQ co-ordinator her opinion on my question to get final approval. The co-ordinator, Stephanie, said that it was a still a little vague and therefore suggested this instead:

‘How far did the gender stereotypes created in ‘Friends’ change over the decade of the show’s production as a response to the changes in American Society?’

I really like this suggestion because it gets across what I wanted it too, but in more concise language as well as not closing too many doors for me to explore in this project.

Update - 17.06.2014

At lunchtime today, there was a group workshop for everyone doing the EPQ to talk about the different methods of research available to us as well as just a general refresh to keep us up to date. We were all given some very detailed handouts to help us with our research, some is shown here:

This was a very useful session because it helped to show me that there are forms of research accessible to me other than just on the internet. The next step for me will be to make some research plans to help me organise my research for the next few weeks. This was a suggestion from the teacher carrying out the workshop and I think it was a really good idea for me as I can make a section to reflect on what I found and whether it was an effective form of research, further helping me plan for my future research.

Update - 16.06.2014

Today, Linda and I had another meeting to talk about progressing forward with my project as well as filling in the Project Proposal part A paperwork. We decided on a question title for the project which was:

How far were the main characters created in "Friends" a response to stereotypes of single adults in American society at that time and did they change over the decade of the production of the show?

Before we can be absolutely certain that this will be my title, we needed to get approval from the main EPQ teacher and this would be one my my next steps.

The two photos below are the notes I made during this meeting:

From this meeting, the next steps we decided I should take were to choose the specific episodes my project will focus on as well as asking my Media Studies teacher and my Psychology teacher for advice on finding related books and evidence.
